Social Security Number (SSN)

Social security numbers are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. Social security numbers are used to report your wages to the government and to determine eligibility for social security benefits.

Getting a SSN has a lot of benefits when you live in US, such us finding a job, getting a credit card, applying a cell phone and renting an apartment. However, it is most difficult for a foreign student to obtain a SS number.

If your school has authorized you to work either on or off campus, you may get a SSN. The following links provide helpful information on this topic.

Some universities may invite a Social Security officer to campus to offer a SSN to new international students after school's orientation. One such school is CSUSB. Contact your school's International Students Center for details.
